Earlier this month, State Representative Allen Skillicorn (R-East Dundee) donned his fire proof race gear and strapped into a racecar to raise awareness about pet rescue and adoption. Skillicorn drove the Pet Rescue Motorsports Honda CRX at the recent Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Majors road race at Blackhawk Farms Raceway. Pet Rescue Motorsports is an organization dedicated to spreading the word about pet rescue and adoption.
“Pet rescue and adoption is of particular importance to my wife and I as volunteers for our local animal shelter,” said Skillicorn. “It is estimated that 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters annually in the U.S., but only half are adopted by a loving family. With so many animals in need of loving homes, anything we can do to help raise awareness is worthwhile.”
Skillicorn took third place in the Super Touring Light class at the Majors event, a qualifying event for the SCCA National Championships to be held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in September. Qualifying for Indianapolis gives Pet Rescue Motorsports a national stage to increase awareness about pet rescue and adoption issues.
In addition to volunteering and racing to increase awareness, Skillicorn has also been working legislation in Springfield. One piece of legislation, House Bill 2810, has already passed the House and is currently under consideration in the Senate.
“Whether volunteering at a shelter, behind the wheel at the race track or working on legislation in Springfield, I look forward to more opportunities to raise awareness about this important issue,” said Skillicorn.
